Not very many. This is precisely what is at stake for hotel restaurants looking to fill their tables. Hotel restaurants are first and foremost restaurants. They offer the same service as their autonomous counterparts: a kitchen, food, a seating room, and a staff. We talked to experts, hotel managers, and restaurant supervisors for hotel groups to better understand the issues of the trade and the measures taken to respond to them. Everyone in the business is of one mind : hotel restaurants operate at a far lower rate than their seating capacity At first glance, it's easy to think that hotel restaurants have a head start over other restaurants-they come in with a ready clientele staying right above. Research has shown that hotels with 63% of their rooms booked will be able to fill of the restaurant's tables with those very same customers. An occupancy rate of 30% guaranteed by hotel guests does not sound so bad. Save for the fact that of the restaurant remains to be filled. To get there, hotel restaurants will have to target non-guest customers. This is where things get tricky: having lunch or dinner inside a hotel is not yet part of the customs for the general population. Most people do not think about it because they do not see the restaurant independently from the hotel. It proves even more complicated for hotel restaurants to bring in outside customers as they are usually not visible as restaurants, but as "a part" of a hotel. A lack of identity separate from the hotel puts hotel restaurants at a disadvantage A restaurant with the same name as the hotel that houses it exists only as a "feature" of that hotel. This explains why potential customers are not even aware of hotel restaurants in themselves, and do not think about them when looking for places to eat. But this initial observation is not a death sentence, and many hotel restaurants across the Atlantic manage to reach very satisfying occupancy rates while keeping the name of the hotel and adding unique epithets for the restaurant. This is the case for Standard Grill, the Standard Hotel's restaurant, which managed to take advantage of the hotel's reputation to open its doors to customers from other horizons. Others go even further and turn the hotel's restaurant into a brand in itself. Creating and tapping into a strong brand identity can mean a bright growth potential for hotel restaurants Some hotels have pushed the strategy to the point where they turned their restaurant into real profit centers. The Barrire Group, responsible for the Fouquet's brand, now welcomes on a daily basis diners eager to eat at Fouquet's, not at "the Barrire Hotel's restaurant." "The Fouquet's brand was created with the goal of reinforcing our restaurants' image to attract more customers outside of hotel guests," Pierre-Louis Renou, manager of the Cannes establishments, tells us. The group succeeded in building such a strong restaurant brand that people have stopped associating it with the parent hotels. Other hotels manage to negotiate exclusive deals to house atypical or in-demand restaurants still rare on the market. In New York, the Parker is now home to the sole location of the Burger Joint brand. The "burger joint" is located behind a curtain in the main hall of the hotel, and boasts a unique decor (with customers' testimonials on the wall), its own website, and its own social media accounts. The concept is showcased both in situ and online, and it works: expect an average waiting time of one hour every day to taste a burger! Hotel restaurants have their own unique features According to the hotel they are in, their location, their product line, some restaurants have a more urgent need to bring in outside customers than others. Olivier Clerc, Restaurant Operations Director for the Grape Hospitality group, tells us that hotels close to business centers (where companies lack an office cafeteria) host many business lunches, but struggle more with weekend shifts. Hotels located near offices with cafeterias do not often succeed in attracting individuals for the lunch shift, but manage to get more satisfying turnover rates in the evening with hotel guests. For others, we can also highlight how season patterns impact hotel restaurants. Anthony Torkington, former general manager at the Saint James Hotel in Bouliac, tells us that the Saint James's restaurant in Bouliac attracts enough customers in the winter to generate a satisfying revenue on lunches. In the summer however, evenings work better thanks to the summer specials they developed, the longer days, and an outdoor terrace with a panoramic view of Bordeaux. We spoke to specialists in order to identify the best initiatives for hotel restaurants to attract customers in the right areas. Giving the restaurant a proper identity is the first step in making sure it is viable To attract customers who are not hotel guests, a hotel restaurant is already ahead if it has a proper identity-a name, distinct from the hotel, a logo, a chef, a website. The restaurant has to be visible physically and online as a separate entity in and of itself. That was Grape Hospitality's wager with Happy Dock, the restaurant housed by the Mercure Hotel in Le Havre. The place was refurbished, the menu redesigned by Sophie Menut, the chef at the helm of the kitchen. Today, the restaurant has its own website, and appears as a restaurant in its own right: The Hoxton Grill in London's Hoxton Hotel preserved the already famous Hoxton brand, and followed the model of the Standard in New York: Once its proper identity established, the restaurant has to be promoted and to that end use the right cost-effective online marketing tools. Communicating not as a hotel feature but as a restaurant strengthens the establishment's online presence 80% of people look up restaurants online. They have to be able to see, right next to independent restaurants, suggestions of hotel restaurants welcoming customers who are not guests at the hotel. To that end, restaurants have to be listed online independently from their hotel. Good organic SEO, a smart online communications strategy, a website, and independent Facebook and Instagram accounts are necessary to boost the restaurant's visibility. This is what the Hoxton Grill in London's Hoxton Hotel did on Instagram: A good social media strategy is a way to reach more potential customers, but we also recommend focusing on having strong local roots to widen turnover rates. Developing strong local roots is a way to promote the restaurant to those most likely to become loyal customers Consumers trust products as long as they know where they come from. Working with local growers and producers means getting closer to customers. The Saint James in Bouliac picked that method for the dishes on its menu, but it also went further. The Saint James in Bouliac created the "Saint James Market." Four times a year, on a Sunday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., the hotel invites local growers (who supply the restaurant's kitchen) to sell their products to the public. About 1100 people come every time. The goal of the seasonal market is, as Anthony Torkington relates, is to attract and entice Bordeaux residents to come have lunch or dinner in hotel restaurants: "We highlighted this type of events to promote the establishments and get people talking about them in a different light." Developing strong local roots can also take the form of astute diversification to highlight specific services and improve the restaurant's renown. Diversifying the smart way: by capitalizing on their strengths and proximity to hotels, hotel restaurants have the potential to become drop-in "third places" Introducing new activities associated with the hotel's restaurant is a way to attract a new customer base Diversification is a way for hotel restaurants to take advantage of their strengths, namely how close they are to a hotel and all of its amenities. Indeed, as Olivier Clerc points out, "We have to inject life into hotel restaurants, these days we live in a world where everything is modernized, and we have an obligation to go out and get customers from outside of the hotel." By capitalizing on these assets, hotel restaurants can organize special events and bring in new people inside their walls. Grape Hospitality's restaurants took some interesting initiatives in that regard. Once a month, the Mercure Hotel in Roissy sets up an exhibition by volunteer artists, with a gallery opening to boot, which attracts new people to the hotel, and is also a chance to sell beverages and various meats and cheeses, either at the bar or in the hotel. By taking advantage of the existing hotel structures, the restaurant can develop a range of products aimed at customers outside of the hotel Hotels usually serve breakfasts which more or less resemble what a brunch would look like (eggs, cheese, charcuterie etc.). Starting with the advantages they already had, the Amour Hotel and the Marriott Champs lyses developed a brunch offer to attract customers outside the hotel. One way to promote their new diversified offer was to collaborate with influencers. Two of them, pia_mbd and callmevoyou were invited to try the brunch and share their experience on their social media accounts. Their audience, for the most part young, urban, and for whom brunch is a fact of life, was able to discover the hotel restaurant's new offer. One of the oldest English traditions is the afternoon tea, and it is more than renowned in London: in some of the most beautiful hotels such as the Ritz London, one has to wait several months for a seat a one of its tables set for tea. The tradition has since crossed the pond and hotels in Paris seized the opportunity to fill their salons and generate new avenues for revenue. Indeed, hotels like the Shangri La or the Westminster Hotel have developed a "Tea Time" service catering to a younger audience, and resorted to influencers to promote it. Another example of smart diversification: Olivier Thomas, director of the Blagnac Pullman near Toulouse, saw that the restaurant's lunch revenue was seriously impeded by the proximity of a number of office cafeterias. The simple lunch menu was not enough to attract the surrounding business crowd. Seeing this, Olivier Thomas developed a special menu with real added value and a competitive edge: "packages," or lunch formulas to which he added a pass granting access to the pool, a massage, or a sports class within the hotel. Going beyond with a strong concept grants hotel restaurants a new appeal Still at Grape Hospitality, the Mercure in Sophia Antipolis took in a restaurant with quite a strong concept: "In the Dark. Dinner is served in pitch-black darkness by nonseeing people. The experience goes beyond the simple meal; senses are thrown. Deprived from their sight, customers are invited to re-evaluate their perception of taste. This buzzworthy initiative was a way to promote both the hotel and the restaurant, and to bring in a new audience. The success was such that the collaboration was renewed. We would like to kindly thank the hotel restaurant professionals who took the time to answer our questions: Pierre-Louis Renou, Area General Manager for the Barrire Group in Cannes. He manages three hotels: the Majestic Cannes, the Gray d'Albion Cannes, and the Carl Gustaf St Barth. Anthony Torkington, former General Manager at the Saint James in Bouliac. He was just named new General Director of Relais & Chteaux. Olivier Clerc, Director of Restaurant Operations at Grape Hospitality. Launched in 2017, Grape Hospitality is the owner, operator, and manager of 85 hotels in 8 European countries, which represents over 9000 rooms operated under a franchise contract.
How to Clean Marble Table Tops
Regular cleaning of a marble table top is necessary to keep the table top looking nice and shiny. You can use a soft cloth that has been dampened with water for regular cleaning of dust then dry the top using a soft dry cloth to remove any water droplets. If the marble top needs a more thorough cleaning, you can use a solution of mild soap and water and dry with a soft dry cloth. Never use harsh or abrasive cleaners on marble. Marble is a porous stone that will last a very long time with the proper care but as it is porous, it is prone to stains. Whenever stains occur, they should be cleaned up as soon as possible to minimize the lasting effect. A mixture of 4/5 water and 1/5 hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean up a stain. Dampen a tissue with the solution, lay it over the stain for approximately four hours, then wipe up the stain. Repeat if necessary. Repeated washing of a marble table top will dull the surface. When you notice that the surface is dull you will want to polish the marble to bring back the original shine and elegance. There are commercial marble stone polishes that can be bought for this purpose. Using polish to clean marble should not dim the color because marble polish is a substance designed to enhance the appearance of the marble. When you use this type of product, it will provide an extra shine and keep the marble looking like new. If used properly, it will make the color both clearer and brighter. When you polish your marble surface, use the appropriate type of polish for your material. You should only purchase marble polish from a marble and stone retailer. Basic marble cleaning products will generally not remove minor scratches from the surface. If you have scratches on the surface of your marble sink or countertop, a specialty cleaner will only clean them. It will do nothing to actually remove them. If you want to remove the scratches, you may need to use a polisher. To do so, sand the top layer of the marble with a light piece of sandpaper, then apply a polish to the surface. It will generally remove the light scratches and significantly improve the look of the marble surface.1. How can I know which marble is the best?Kindly read my earlier answer on similar questionBharat Bhushan Singal's answer to Which is the best Indian marble, and where can I buy it from?Thanks2. Probability of picking the red marble twiceThe value is equivalent to an infinite series according to the function: SUM(n=1,inf,(1/2n)^2)Equivalent to: (1/4)SUM(n=1,inf,1/n^2)Which the latter returns: pi^2/6, divided by 4 gives us pi^2/24, or roughly 41.1%. It definitely feels odd that in this case it is more likely that this procedure will continue infinitely than it is that it would eventually end. Very interesting problem!3. how do I make the marble floor shine? They make products to do just this. First you must clean the floor well. Of course they sell a product for this too. Then you use the polish. A buffer with a lambs wool pad is best to use on the buffer. Buffer and a marble polish works best. Don t use any other types of products such as mirror polish or waxes since they may ruin the marble or stain it permanently. This study plans to examine a couple of properties with respect to the utilization of this material in ceramic clay. This res earch effort covers the use of marble dust in various proportions for the formation of bricks. The percentages utilized were up to 30% at an amplification of 5% by weight for specimen of marble dust. Bricks containing marble dust in various proportions were formed, dried and afterward burnt in oven at ce rtain temperature. Bulk density, porosity, water absorption and compres ve strength were determined for these bricks. It was observed that lightweight bricks with minor difference in t values of bulk density were delivered . It was viewed that porous bricks up t 52.32% that of standard bricks were delivered by utilizing 30 % by weigh t of marble dust. Therefore, the water absorption was expanded up to 35.92%. How to Remove Rust From Cast Iron Table Tops - Woodworking Equipment
How To Remove Rust from Cast Iron Table TopsRemoving Rust from Cast Iron Table Tops Like Table Saws, Router Tables and Other Woodworking EquipmentAnyone that owns woodworking equipment for their shop knows that rust is inevitable on the cast iron table tops. Let me show you how I like to remove rust from cast iron table tops and apply paste wax to keep them looking and operating like the day they were new.A clean and waxed cast iron table top is smoother than a baby's bottom. However, if you do not take care of your shop equipment the shiny looking cast iron table top it will soon start to rust and get pitted. Above and to the right are photos of a cast iron table top for a router table. I was in the process of updating the table and the first step was cleaning up the rusted cast iron and getting some wax on it. Below are some tips and the method I like to use when removing rust from cast iron table tops. There are literally an endless number of ways to remove rust from a cast iron table top. My method is one I've used for years since learning how to do it from my dad and grand father. First off you will need to pick up a few supplies including:• Mineral Spirits - This is the best cleaning solution for removing the rust form the cast iron. I know some people also like to use WD-40 but I prefer the mineral spirits.• Steel Wool - Steel wool is perfect for removing rust without causing surface damage to cast iron table tops. I prefer the synthetic sheet versions of steel wool as shown above (plus these allow for a great trick noted below).• 500 Grit Wet Sand Paper (Optional) - I prefer not using sand paper but occasionally it's the only product that will remove really deep pitted rust from cast iron. Use it only as a last resort.• Paper Towels / or Clean Rags - You will need a good quantity of clean rags and/or paper towels to clean up.• Paste Wax - After the cast iron is cleaned you will want to condition the surface with a good quality paste wax. I like Trewax which contains Carnauba Wax. This stuff makes the surface nice and smooth which helps wood slide better across it and it helps keep the surface from rusting as soon.Use a rag or paper towel to apply liberal amounts of mineral spirits to the surface of the cast iron. It's important to clean off all the dirt, grime, saw dust and surface rust. This step will likely take a few attempts in order to get all the bulk grime off the surface. The next step involves some elbow grease...or it used to! IMPORTANT TIP: Several years ago I read a tip in a woodworking magazine that said you could use the synthetic steel wool pads under your random orbit sander to speed up the process and produce amazing results. Guess really works! As you can see below I simply place the steel wool pad between the cast iron and my sander (I leave a sanding disc on the sander to create more friction to help hold the pad in place). As you "sand" the surface with the steel wood pad it's important to keep applying mineral spirits to the surface with a rag. The mineral spirits really help the steel wool remove all the rust. After only 10 minutes I was able to almost completely restore this cast iron table top back to it's original shine.Once you've finished scouring the surface with steel wool you will want to clean it very well to remove any access dirt and mineral spirits. Then you should apply a liberal coating of paste wax to the surface. The wax has two functions. First and foremost it makes the surface very smooth and slippery which is important so that wood easily slides over the surface. And secondly, it helps protect the newly cleaned surface from rusting again. As you can see the cast iron router table top looks like new and it's clean, smooth and ready for lots more action in the wood shop. This method of removing rust from cast iron table tops can be used on table saws, band saws, jointers, planers, router tables, and just about any wood shop equipment with a cast iron table top.Where can I find a steam-iron table for removing warping from paper artwork?i believe you are looking for a dry mount press or a dry mounting press. its main purpose is to attach photographs to backing boards. it works by making a "sandwich" of 1) backing board (mat board, illustration board, etc.) 2) heat sensitive dry mounting tissue (basically a sheet of paper that melts when heated 3) photograph. But, for your purposes, it would be great for smoothing paper, providing that you run some tests on scraps of paper to determine the proper temperature and time. as a cheaper alternative, the starving art student might use a regular clothes iron. on a junky table, put down a piece of clean mat or illustration board to protect both the table & your paper. making sure there's no water in the iron, set it on low heat or possibly perma press. without pressing hard, start at the middle and work out to the edges. it would be better to move with curved arcs rather than straight back and forth lines. again, practice on large scraps of similar papers ............... Good luck! ................
7 House Interior Design Tips for Small Space Living
Small spaces have great potential when it comes to house interior design. Make more room while giving each space your unique design expression by applying these 7 rules the pros use!1. Slim Down - Get a large box, basket or bag and sift through those small accents. Too many little things sitting around a small room will clog of the room's space quickly. It's amazing how much air space you will create by being super specific about what you have placed on table tops and shelves.2. Trim Down - Heavy, bulky window treatments not only block the limited light in your small room but are also space hoggers. Free those windows by using shades, blinds or even shutters. There are some gorgeous options to be made or purchased at your favorite house interior design store. Have a little extra money to spend, have your blinds custom designed in fabrics that compliment the rest of your room's decor.3. Color Down - Though a variety of color breaks up a large house, too much color in a small one will work against your already limited amount of space. It is best to paint all the walls one color or use a similar pallet hue for small subtle changes from room to room.4. Lighten Up - Pull in that limited light with the use of mirrors positioned directly across from a window. Use semi gloss paint to reflect the light and keep your furniture polished and your appliances clean.5. Fabric Up - It is better to fabric up your accents and leave the large furniture pieces to solids. If you already have a busy couch with a floral print, shapes or strips, consider toning things down a bit with a slip cover. Then, bring in those extra fabrics in your accents to provide some visual depth and emotional interest. Have fun with this part of your house interior design project!Bring in those weaves, patterns, and quilted fabrics for this.6. Liven Up - Nothing says open space and health like fresh plants placed around a room. Potted plants are preferred but bountiful bouquets regularly freshened up will also work well.Limited for room? Positioning a potted plant in front of the fireplace mantle during the warmest time of the year is a great use of that space. Angle your furniture and use the extra space to display an indoor tree or palm.7. Step Up - Light bare wood is always the best and beautiful of option for giving a small room a larger appearance. Flooring in an apartment cannot be changed but it can be changed up! Place a lighter area rug on top of the existing carpet. Or in the case of a dark linoleum find a light bamboo or Berber to bring out the light.
Artist Known for His Quirky Timepieces Tackles Something That Doesn't Tick
These might be the only works of art to come with a free can of Dust Blaster. Leave it to Roger Wood to think of that. The Hamilton artist is well-known for his timepieces, or klockwerks, as he calls them. He constructs the quirky clocks from ready-made objects. For Stories Without Words, his exhibition at Carnegie Gallery in Dundas, Wood tackles something that doesn't tick. The exquisitely-intricate constructions, or assemblages, hang on walls and stand on floors. They incorporate layers of found, often mass-produced, objects - many of them teeny-tiny. "I have created assemblages in the distant past," says Wood, 76. "But this current series started about three years ago when I was asked to make a small piece for a fundraiser. I got a great response and decided to make more. They're a nice break from the timepieces."Like a storyteller who begins with an idea or two, Wood knows what gets him going. "I have my own rules for these pieces," he tells me. "Each will start with a sinuous human figure, a tree or two and birds. After that, each piece will go its own way." A familiar copy of the Statue of Liberty stands in the top centre of Stories Without Words 1705. It's small in scale compared with a bird that flies above it on the right. A sun with a face hovers behind the bird. To the right of Liberty, a female winged Victory figurine stands holding a torch with her arms up in the air.Wood's horror vacui leaves no space unfilled. Birds, flowers, letters, part of a building, spirals and a bare tree jostle for attention."I have hundreds of boxes, drawers and bins of loosely catalogued bits and pieces to choose from," he says. "I find them at thrift stores, flea and antique markets, auctions including eBay, art and craft stores and specialty stores such as model train shops."Since some of the objects are mass produced, they do pop up again. Birds and letters, for instance, grace Stories Without Words 1613. The central circle, topped by an eastern type of goddess, contains a seated man on the right and a woman on the left flanking a stand topped by a cup and saucer. The base of this piece looks like an ornate ceiling fixture. That's no big deal: Wood used a salad bowl for the base of another piece."Sometimes I use just a plain piece of wood. A couple of pieces were created from wooden table tops. Other times I use ready-shaped pieces from art and craft stores. And, yes, I did make one from a large wooden salad bowl - one of my favourites."The head of a stag looks out from the top of "Stories Without Words 1625." This oval relief includes a man with a sword, a chess piece, a smiling sun, birds, flowers, letters and a seated man. How does he know when a piece is finished?"Sometimes it's when I run out of room for more. Otherwise it's when my intuition tells me to stop."Wood unifies his compositions by painting everything white. The paleness and the abundance of detail recall Northern European medieval ivory reliefs.Ancient ivories were notorious dust magnets. Wood is offering a can of Dust Blaster with every purchase. "It's the best way to dust them."Regina Haggo, art historian, public speaker, curator and former professor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, teaches at the Dundas Valley School of Art.dhaggo@the Special to The Hamilton SpectatorRegina Haggo, art historian, public speaker, curator and former professor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, teaches at the Dundas Valley School of Art.dhaggo@the Special to The Hamilton Spectator
Where to Find Recycled Paper Table Tops
Where to Find Recycled Paper Table CoversFinding recycled paper table tops for everyday use or parties can be quite challenging. It seems not many party supply companies have jumped on the environmentally friendly track, and most party or themed table covers are not in synch with green living. If you are persistent, though, there are several online sources to find table covers that are both attractive and recycled. Here is an overview of a few of those sites.www.greenpartygoods.comAs the name suggests, Green Party Goods has a wide selection of party supplies that are recycled and biodegradable. This includes a variety of table covers and decorative items like table runners and place mats. Pricing is reasonable, but there is a minimum order requirement of $19.99. Adding matching napkins can help you reach this minimum quickly.www.mypapershop.comThis site has a section dedicated to recycled party supplies. This includes plates, cups, napkins, and table covers. But be sure to read the description of each item before you purchase, as not every item on the site is made of recycled materials. Shipping prices are par and ship times are fast, but the materials are a bit high-end, so the prices can be higher. has tons of products on the site that are eco friendly and made of recycled materials. Everything from candles to clocks to home décor. The best part is, if you can't seem to find what you are looking for on their site, you can call them for access to hundreds of more items they have available. Prices are generally very low, with many items qualifying for free shipping, but finding the perfect product may take a little extra in the UK, this site has many party supplies, much like My Paper Shop. Also like My Paper Shop, not all of the party supplies are made of 100% recycled material, but most contain at least a percentage. The table covers available are 100% recycled, and the selection changes from time to time, so it is a good site to bookmark for future reference if they don't have what you want right now. Prices are average, but they currently only ship to Ireland, Scotland, England, and the Isle of Man.Other OptionsOf course there are also stores that carry recycled paper table tops. It really depends on if you'd like the cover to be 100% recycled, or if you are OK with accepting less than that. This article is focusing on table covers that are 100% recycled. It is also a good idea to find out what kind of ink is used on the table covers, as water-based inks are the most eco-friendly. There is also the option of making your own recycled paper table tops, which requires a bit more work but can be very fun to do!

Does anyone here have a platform bed?My best friend has one and they hurt their shins. I also looked at a few at rooms to go and I banged my shin5. How To Build A Twin Platform BedWe have a guest that will be staying the night, a very messy guest room, and a twin mattress ... on the floor. I decided to get busy and Build A Twin Platform Bed with the thought that one of our kids could use it when they are off at college, renting a room off campus. Eventually, I would like to have a queen size bed in the guest room but this makes sense for now! This twin platform bed was pretty simple and inexpensive to build. It needed to be easy to disassemble so it could be hauled around easily and it needed to be inexpensive because ... this is not meant to be a family heirloom. Nope! It has a purpose to serve on a budget! This post contains affiliate links. When you purchase through an affiliate link, we receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Disclosure. Our twin size mattress dimensions are 37-1/2 x 73-1/2 x 11 and I built this bed to fit those dimensions. Adjust your cuts to accommodate your mattress size. Note: My cuts are 2-1/2 shorter than our mattress size. This is because the mattress partially sits on top of the 4 x 4 legs. if you choose not to use casters, adjust the cut of the legs. Our twin mattress has a hard bottom and needed less slats than our Naturepedic mattress did. How To Assemble The Twin Platform Bed This bed is actually pretty simple to build! Make your cuts, according to your mattress size, and sand each piece with 120 grit sand paper. With the Kreg Jig, drill three pocket holes in each end of your headboard and footboard panel. Pay attention to what side of the board you want to be visible and make the pocket holes on the opposite side. Next, attach the headboard and footboard panels to the legs with 2-1/2 pocket hole screws. I placed a 1 x 4 under each end of the panel so the panel would sit back a bit from the 4 x 4 leg instead of being flush. The top of the panel and the top of the legs are flush. The next picture will show what I mean! The headboard and footboard assembled. Pretty basic, right? Then, attach the bed rail hooks on each 4 x 4 leg. I attached mine 2-1/2 from the top and as close to the inside edge that I could, in order to leave room for the side rail. Oh my goodness! These are non-mortise bed rail hooks! I struggled with the mortise bed rail hooks I used on our King Size Farmhouse Bed so I was pretty stoked to find these bed rail hooks! Now it was time to attach the bed slat supports. To do this, I laid the 2 x 4 on the inside of the 2 x 10 side rail and placed my 2 x 2 on top so I would know where to attach the 2 x 4. We want the mattress to sit right on top of this platform bed. I used Kreg Clamps and 2-1/2 Deck Plus Screws to attach the bed slat supports. This part was a bit tricky. The bed rail hooks needed to be lined up just right so the bed rail would sit flush with the headboard and footboard. I laid the footboard and headboard on the ground with the hooks attached. Then, I had my husband hold the side rails up against it, where I wanted it to be, and marked the screw holes. I am glad I did it this way because the hooks sit back a bit on the bed rail in order to sit flush. I would not have known that if I had only measured the correct height. The bed rails were pretty easy to attach and it was all flush ... enough! I used Homemade Stain for my Twin Bed. After the bed was stained, I took it apart, laid the pieces on sawhorses, and finished each piece with a coat of wax. I then attached a caster wheel to each leg. After the wax was dry, I took the bed pieces into the guest room and reassembled it. This is where you would measure the inside dimension of your bed so you can cut your bed slats the proper width. I placed the bed slats and side rail blocks where they needed to go. Next, I attached each block to the side rail support by pre-drilling a hole and then used one self-sinking screw in each block. This was a bit tedious as I used my Kreg Clamp on each block to keep it from moving. We are happy with this simple Twin Platform Bed! It was easy and inexpensive to build and should be a good thing to have around when the kids say goodbye to dorm life and rent a room, when they are off at college. Of course, we are also quite happy that our guest will not have to sleep on a mattress, on the floor. How To Make Wood Stain With Common Household Products Fun DIY House Projects You Can Do Too!
Leesa's Sapira Mattress Has Springs but still Comes in a Box
Mattress-in-a-box companies, from Tuft & Needle to Casper, ship foam and latex mattresses to your door for under $900 for a queen size. Most offer a single type, with dimensions being the only thing you can choose from. Leesa is a member of that club, but today it's branching but with a new brand called Sapira. It's supposed to offer a more luxurious mattress that is a hybrid of springs and foam. The queen costs $1,475, $585 more than the 10-inch-thick, all-foam Leesa. It's an inch thicker, too, with a 1.5-inch top layer of high-density foam; a 1.5-inch layer of memory foam; and steel pocket springs in between two, 1-inch layers of stabilizing foam. Pocket springs are encased in their own cloth pouch. With traditional innerspring mattresses, the coils are tied together, so when you lie down, your weight gets transferred across the bed. That means that, in general, you'll be less likely to feel your partner tossing and turning with the pocket spring variety.Related:Nightingale smart home sleep system masks both indoor and outdoor noisesI tried the Sapira out for a couple of nights, and I found this to be very true. Pushing down on one side of the bed left the other side unaffected. I pressed the mattress down about six inches away from my sleeping cat, and he didn't stir. The overall experience of getting the Sapira is pretty similar to the Leesa one. It arrives at your door all boxed up and compressed, and you slice through a few layers of plastic to let it plump up. You'll get 100 days to try out the mattress, and the company will pick it up if you decide not to keep it within that time frame. The Sapira is definitely a dense mattress. The full-size mattress weighs in at 98 pounds, according to the shipping label. Even though it's only an added inch, the Sapira seems thicker than the Leesa. The top layer of foam is certainly soft, but overall the mattress feels pretty firm.Other brands like Helix and Luma have been offering these "hybrid" foam and spring mattresses for a while, and by offering it as a separate, more luxury-minded brand, Leesa can offer another option beyond its single-type-of-firmness mattress.
My Minimalist Wardrobe
Minimalism is very important to me, and not just because of the simplicity of it all. It has helped me distance myself from the world of social conformity, build better relationships, and lessen my addiction to social media. I spend more time getting my work done and less time worrying about whether or not I've got my hands on this season's mom jeans. For those of you who are not really sure what minimalism is beyond owning less things, let me explain. Minimalism goes far past "Less is more." It's a way of limiting yourself to the things that actually provide use, are needed, and improve your life. By owning only what we need, we are abandoning the consumerism our society has adopted and putting that energy toward the things that truly matter. Our family, friends, career, education, and goals become more important than the stuff we've gathered over the years. To cleanse a space is to cleanse a mind.I desire to keep my space simple and clean, yet I want it to be filled with art and nice clothing. I am not a fan of the "plain white button down as a daily outfit" look. I want some variety, but with a limitation on the amount. Here is how I do it.When I began, I easily had 200 pieces of clothing. When I say "pieces of clothing," I include shirts, pants, coats, dresses, scarves, shoes, and bags or purses. One day when I was hanging up clothes, my closet made a very unfriendly creaking sound, and as soon as I turned to investigate, the entire rack was coming off the wall. It was time to let go.As I started getting rid of things, I realized how little I actually wore any of the clothes I owned. I would rotate the same ten tops and three jeans and I only wore one pair of shoes among the eleven pairs I owned. And on top of the massive amount of clothing in my closet, I had a 6-drawer dresser each full of the clothes I never wore. I owned at least five bags, but I could not give you the actual amount because I only ever carried one and the rest meant nothing to me.I follow the general rule that if it does not provide meaning or use in my life, get rid of it. I've been able to follow this… mostly. I still have a hard time getting rid of clothing I do not even want if it still has some use left. I also feel the overwhelming urge to trash everything until I only own two shirts, one pair of pants, and a pair of shoes. Unfortunately, this is not realistic for someone who enjoys a variety and would not want to be caught dead wearing the same thing two days in a row. So, I've gone down to the absolute basics for my own personal style. The climate in my area gets both very hot and very cold, so I have to have a decent amount of clothes for each season. Many days, it starts off cold in the morning and is hot by midday, so I must have clothing that's good for layering. I decided that I had to have at least one outfit for interviews and professional occasions as well as one dress for formal family events. For the most part, deciding what I needed was easy. But the most difficult decisions lied with choosing which items to keep and which to toss out. Every once in a while I make a log of all the clothing I own, track the newest additions as well as the donations, and make sure I am limiting myself to a decent amount of clothing, not going overboard in either direction. Here's what my minimalist closet looks like:Tops: Two flannel shirts, three sweaters, one long-sleeve top, three t-shirts, one blouse, and one gray tank top. Total=11 items.Bottoms: one pair of high-rise jeans, one pair low-rise, one pair of leggings. Total=3 items. Coats: One petticoat, one denim jacket, one blazer, one raincoat, two summer jackets, one work-out jacket. Total=7 items.Shoes: One pair of work shoes, one pair oxfords, two pairs of sneakers, one pair of sandals, one pair of boots. Total=6 items.Dresses: One t-shirt dress, one formal dress, one summer dress. Total=3 items. Accessories: 3 winter scarves, one purse, one book bag. Total=5 items.Overall closet total=35 items. This closet suits me well a good 98% of the time. I find myself occasionally worried about what to wear because I do allow myself to have more options than I probably should. But like I said, I am young! I like options! I like colors! It's okay to be a minimalist and not want stark white pressed shirts only! Color is good. Color is happy. Options are okay. And that's my minimalist wardrobe! My journey began in the beginning of February 2017 and this is where I've gotten in the last year. Much of my inspiration has drawn from the one and only duo The Minimalists.
