Do I Really Need 10 AWG Wire for a AC Condenser That Says 15 AMP Max?

Typically in an ideal situation I would use the next size up breaker and size the wire accordingly. Then at the disconnect use the size fuse required by the unit. The fuses are slow blow so they wo not pop with the high startup current but the breakers blow quickly. Doing it this way tends to have fewer nuisance trips. Wiring everything for 15 amps would be perfectly acceptable and realistically should not have any problems. The important thing is to have something that will trip at 15 amps to avoid damage to the air conditioner.

From my experience in the field, I believe you may have a wiring problem or an air flow problem. The wiring problem would be fairly easy to find. Open all areas that have electrical and check for loose or burnt up wiring. If your indoor system has an air flow problem, the lack of air flow would cause flood back. If your system is flooding back hard, your compressor will overload and possibly pop the breaker. Flood back is when liquid refrigerant enters the inlet of the compressor. Since compressors only pump gas, it would over amp. Make sure your filters are changed often. If you do not have a filter this where your problem is. Call back that HVAC tech and tell him to check air flow. Also ask him for Superheat and Subcool readings, the tech should know exactly what is wrong by measuring Superheat and Subcooling =). Oh and what is the model of the indoor unit? Units could be mismatched. You could also have a restriction in the expansion valve causing high head pressure to the point of over amping.
