Patents: Cfc Recycler

By BARRY FOX TAISEI Kabushiki Kaisha of Tokyo obviously thinks that British scrap merchants are as socially aware as their Japanese counterparts. Taisei has filed a British patent application (2 215 831) on a tool to prevent the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), usually known by the trade name Freon, from the cooling systems of refrigerator or car air conditioning systems from escaping into the atmosphere. Taisei offers the sobering statistic that in Japan 6 million cars are destroyed every year, of which 80 percent are equipped with an air conditioner containing around 1 kilogram of Freon.

A nozzle on the new device connects to the pipework of an air conditioner or domestic refrigerator. A compressor pumps gas through the cooler coils heating the Freon to aroung 60 degrees centigrade and converts it to gas.

This gas flows through to a condenser where a cooling fan converts it back to liquid, which flows into a storage reservoir. In this way Freon can be recycled, instaead of released into the atmosphere.
